Airline Policies Regarding Birds in the Cabin

Air Tran allows three pets, including small “domesticated” birds per flight, service animals not included. Reservations must be made in advance at 1-800-AIR-TRAN (1-800-247-8726) or 678-254-7999 for international calls. No health certificate is required. Cost is $65 each way. AIR TRAN DOES NOT ALLOW BIRDS TO BE SHIPPED AS CARGO.

Continental Airlines will only allow two pets per flight. Reservations for birds must be made in advance, preferably at the time of passenger booking. Only birds in carriers that fit under the seat are allowed. Continental does not require a health certificate. The charge is $80 each way. Continental has 24 hour availability at their Animal Service Desk 800-575-3335 or 281-553-5052. http://www.continental.com/travel/policies/animals/default.asp

Delta Airlines is the most bird-friendly airline for traveling with birds in the cabin. However, they do have rules and regulations that must be followed including a limitation on the number of animals (including birds) that will be allowed in their flights. Prior reservations are required but not health certificates. The cost is $50 each way. Information can be found at http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/special_travel_needs/pet_travel_information/

Northwest requires reservations in advance but they can be made online at https://www.nwa.com/cgi-bin/res_info.pro Charge is $80 each way. No health certificate is required. http://www.nwa.com/travel/animals/carryonpets.html

United Airlines is a very difficult airline to work with when it comes to birds in the cabin. They only permit canaries, finches and parakeets NO PARROTS, COCKATIELS, LOVE BIRDS or other types of birds are allowed. They also severely limit the number of birds PER PERSON to 2 and require advanced reservations for the bird. United charges $80 each way for pets. Information can be found http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,51255,00.html

U.S. Airways allows one small bird per passenger. Reservations must be made in advance by calling 800-428-4322. Charge is $80 each way.  Information can be found at:http://www.usairways.com/awa/content/traveltools/specialneeds/pets.aspx No health certificate is required.
